Homeschool Programs

Program Information

1st-12th grade

This program is designated for homeschool groups only. These homeschool field trips will be held on three (3) Fridays per month. Each week will feature a different program and will repeat each month. Homeschool field trip options include a modified version of the regular school programs, Estuary Explorers, Forest Expeditions, and Saltmarsh Seining, which are adapted to benefit the wide age range of homeschoolers. These programs will primarily be led by GTM volunteers from 10-11:30 a.m. There is a 15-minute grace period upon arrival. Any late arrivals will not receive the full program.

Estuary Explorers: (Elementary)

This program covers the importance of estuaries, the habitats found within the estuarine system, and the animals that call these habitats home. Students will learn about adaptations and interactions of animals within our estuary and the impact we as humans have on our precious ecosystem. Rotations include:

  • A Plankton Race Activity – learn some of the adaptations of phytoplankton and practice your engineering skills as you create a neutrally buoyant plankton to race against your classmates.

  • Exhibit Hall Scavenger Hunt – this activity is a great way to get to know the reserve and explore its many habitats before you step outside. Don’t forget to look up as you go through the Exhibit Hall for a fascinating view!

  • Animal Discovery Room – this rotation pairs a “meet and greet” with one of our resident diamondback terrapins, where you’ll learn about animal adaptations using estuary biofacts and other hands-on objects.

Forest Expeditions: (Elementary, Middle School)

This program includes three separate rotations:

  • Uplands Hike – learn about natural/cultural resources, uplands ecology, and conservation management.

  • Invasive Species Game – learn about impacts of invasive species to native animals and their habitats.

  • Cultural History – Timucua history, use of natural resources, and survival artifacts.

Salt Marsh Seining: (Elementary, Middle School, High School)

This program introduces the coastal estuarine (where the river meets the sea) environment. Students will learn about the importance and functions of an estuary, while using seine nets and ID guides to identify some of the species that utilize estuarine habitats.  Waders will be provided, but it is strongly recommended that students wear clothing they don’t mind getting wet or dirty!

Please email education@gtmnerr.org to schedule your field trip. The minimum requirement is 15 students with a maximum of 25. Scheduling must be completed a week prior to the date of your visit.
